Preserving Considerations

Ensure,

Front

  • Pick high-grade plexiglass with UV protection, 1/8" thick, crystal clear, non-glare,
    • Lighter
    • Glass has issues (moisture entrapment, likely no UV protection, poster can stick despite spacers or mat)
    • Conservation Glass is better, but can break and expensive
    • Do not use ammonia based cleaner
    • Use especially for bigger posters as it is lighter than glass
  • Use a mat to ensure the glass if lifted off the surface (only possible for smaller than 40"  x 60" posters)

Backing Generally,

  • acid-free
  • acid-neutral
  • avoid foamcore unless acid free such as Artcare Archival System by Bainbridge which should only be a few dollars more

Linen Backing,

  • Expensive and fixes flatten and hide vintage folded posters.
  • Make sure to go with professional who will make it reversable
  • For vintage folders will bring up value if resold
  • ~ cost $75 to $150
  • Not advisable for double sided posters
